RISING COST OF LIVING AND ITS EFFECT ON FAMILIES
The rising cost of living has become one of the most squeezing breaking points on families today. Across many communities and countries, millions of families are facing a financial confrontation. The prices of necessary goods and services such as food, house rent, transportation, and education have increased significantly. Many families are finding it difficult to maintain their way of living and meettheir daily needs.
The most noticeable effect of the rising cost of living is the increase in food prices. In many cases, families skip meals or rely on less nutritious alternatives in other to cope financial pressure. For example, Amaka Francis, a mother of three inAbraka, the weekly trip to the market has become and exercise in anxiety. “I used to buy meat, vegetables, bread, without thinking too much,” she says, holding shopping bag.“ Now I have to choose. Groceries or schools supplies. Never both.” Her story is unusual. Food prices have climbed dramatically over the past three years, pushing higher by supply chain disruptions, fuel costs etc. That ripple through local markets with devastating speed. This has forced some households to reduce the quality and quantity of food they consume.
Transportation cost have also risen sharply. Millions of working families, simply getting to work or taking children to school has become a significant financial burden. The increase in fuel prices has led to higher transport fares, turning the daily commute into a costly exercise that eat deeply into already stretched budgets. Workers, students, or families that depend on public transportation are particularly affected, as a substantial part of their income is now spend on daily travel expenses. Advocate are calling on government to subside public transport, cap fuel prices, and invest in affordable, reliable bus networks that reach underserved communities. Without action, they warn, transport poverty will trap more families in a cycle, where the cost of simply showing up to work, to school, to hospital, become too high to bear.
Housing has become another major concern. Rental prices in urban areas have climbed sharply as landlords pass on their own rising costs to tenants. Families had relocate to less desirable locations, or live in overcrowded condition. Some young families, single parents, find it difficult to pay rent, utility bill, and maintenance, cause place additional stress on household budgets. Finding an affordable home has become a near impossible task. Housing charities report a surge in enquiries form from families on the edge of eviction, with many falling behind on rent for the first time.
Perhaps the most heartbreaking consequence of the cost of it’s impact on children’s education. Parents often struggle to pay school fees, purchase textbooks, and provide othereducational materials for their children. Parents who once strained to meet their cost are now unable to do so, forcing heartbreaking decisions about which child get to stay in school and which must stay at home. When children are pulled out of school, when they go hungry in class, or access the same resources as their wealthier peers, we are not just falling them today. We are diminishing the future of the entire nation.
Social advocates are calling on governments to take urgent action. Including capping essential goods and fuel prices, improving public transportation network, protecting education funding ,and price stabilization. These can help reduce burden on families. Individual can also adopt budget on saving strategies, to manage their finances more effectively. Dealing with rising cost of living requires collective effort, to ensure that families can enjoy decent standard of living and a more secure future.
