Causes of Electoral Malpractices in Nigeria

By Adizue Miracle Chisom

Introduction

Elections are an important aspect of democracy because they provide citizens with the opportunity to choose their leaders through a free and fair election process. In Nigeria, elections are expected to reflect the will of the people and promote good governance. However, electoral malpractice has remained a major challenge to the country’s democratic development. Electoral malpractice refers to illegal actions and dishonest practices carried out before, during, or after elections with the aim of influencing the outcome. These practices include vote buying, ballot box snatching, intimidation of voters, falsification of results, and electoral violence. Understanding the causes of electoral malpractice is essential in finding lasting solutions to the problem.

Quest for Political Power

One of the major causes of electoral malpractice in Nigeria is the excessive desire for political power. Many politicians see political office as a source of wealth, influence, and social status. As a result, they become desperate to win elections at all costs. This desperation often leads them to engage in fraudulent activities such as vote buying, rigging, and intimidation of opponents. Instead of focusing on presenting good policies and programs to the electorate, some politicians resort to illegal means to secure victory.

Poverty & Economic Hardship

Poverty is another significant cause of electoral malpractice in Nigeria. A large percentage of the population struggles with unemployment and economic difficulties. Because of their financial situation, some voters are easily influenced by politicians who offer money, food items, or other gifts in exchange for votes. This practice, known as vote buying, undermines the credibility of elections. Poor citizens may prioritize immediate financial benefits over the long-term consequences of electing incompetent leaders.

Illiteracy and Lack of Political Awareness

The level of political awareness among some Nigerians remains low. Many voters do not fully understand their electoral rights and responsibilities. This lack of knowledge makes them vulnerable to manipulation by politicians and political parties. Illiterate voters may also find it difficult to understand electoral procedures and may be easily deceived by dishonest political actors. Civic education and voter enlightenment programs are often insufficient, especially in rural areas.

Weak Electoral Institutions

Weak electoral institutions contribute greatly to electoral malpractice. The body responsible for conducting elections must be independent, transparent, and efficient. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, poor logistics, and allegations of bias sometimes affect the performance of electoral agencies. When electoral institutions are weak, politicians can exploit loopholes in the system to manipulate election outcomes. Insufficient/inefficient electoral administration can also create opportunities for fraud and irregularities.

Corruption

Corruption is a major factor behind electoral malpractice in Nigeria. Corrupt practices exist in many sectors of society and get into the electoral process. Some electoral officials may accept bribes to alter election results or ignore public offenses. Corruption also encourages politicians to use public resources for personal political gains. When corruption becomes widespread, the integrity of elections is seriously compromised.

Weak Enforcement of Electoral Laws

Although Nigeria has laws designed to regulate elections and punish offenders, enforcement is often weak. Many individuals who engage in electoral malpractice are rarely prosecuted or punished. This creates a situation where offenders believe they can act without consequences. The absence of strict punishment encourages the continuation of electoral fraud and violence. Effective enforcement of electoral laws is necessary to deter potential offenders.

Political Violence & Thuggery

Political violence has become a recurring feature of many elections in Nigeria. Politicians sometimes recruit thugs to intimidate voters, disrupt polling units, and attack political opponents. The use of violence creates fear among voters and discourages participation in the electoral process. In some cases, violence leads to the destruction of election materials and loss of lives. The presence of political thugs undermines the credibility and fairness of elections.

Ethnic and Religious Sentiments

Nigeria is a diverse country with many ethnic and religious groups. Unfortunately, politicians sometimes exploit these differences for political advantage. They may encourage voters to support candidates based on ethnic or religious identity rather than competence and character. This can lead to electoral malpractice as groups seek to ensure victory for their preferred candidates through illegal means. Ethnic and religious politics often creates tension and division during elections.

Lack of Internal Democracy in Political Parties

Many political parties in Nigeria struggle with internal democracy. Candidates are sometimes imposed on party members instead of emerging through transparent primary elections. When party members emerge feeling cheated during candidate selection processes, conflicts often arise. Such conflicts can encourage electoral malpractice as politicians seek alternative means to secure political positions. Strengthening internal democracy within political parties is essential for credible elections.

In Conclusion

Electoral malpractice remains a serious obstacle to democratic development in Nigeria. It is caused by factors such as the quest for political power, poverty, illiteracy, corruption, weak institutions, poor enforcement of electoral laws, political violence, ethnic and religious sentiments, and lack of internal democracy within political parties. These factors undermine free and fair elections and prevent the emergence of credible leaders.

To address electoral malpractice, the government, electoral agencies, political parties, civil society organizations, and citizens must work together to strengthen democratic institutions, promote political education, enforce electoral laws, and encourage transparency and accountability. Only through collective efforts can Nigeria achieve credible elections and sustainable democratic growth.
