Education: The Key to a Better Future
By Osita Marvellous
Education is often described as the key to success because it unlocks opportunities and improves people's lives. It equips individuals with the knowledge, wisdom, understanding, and skills needed for careers and personal development. It also helps people communicate effectively, think logically, and contribute positively to society. With a good education, one can work as a secretary, personal assistant, teacher, entrepreneur, and in many other professions.
Education also develops critical thinking. It enables people to analyse situations, solve problems, and make informed decisions. For example, when an educated person faces a difficult challenge, they can use reasoning and creativity to find possible solutions. Critical thinking allows individuals to approach problems from different perspectives instead of giving up easily. Education also builds confidence and encourages people to believe in their abilities.
Through education, people learn practical skills that improve their daily lives. Subjects such as Home Economics teach personal hygiene, food preparation, decision-making, and even skills like soap making. These practical lessons can become sources of income by helping individuals start small businesses and become financially independent.
Parents invest in their children's education not only because they want them to succeed academically but also because they want them to adapt to society, interact confidently with others, and achieve their goals. Education enables people to share knowledge with others because learning becomes more meaningful when it is passed on.
Educated individuals are often more organised and are better equipped to promote peace, resolve conflicts, and provide effective leadership. Education also helps people understand their rights and responsibilities as citizens. Someone who is illiterate may struggle to understand or defend their rights, while an educated person is more likely to participate actively in society and contribute meaningful ideas during discussions and decision-making.
Despite its many benefits, education also comes with challenges. One major challenge is the high cost of education. Many students become discouraged by the financial demands of schooling. After paying school fees, they are often required to buy handouts, textbooks, and other materials. Some students even drop out because they cannot afford these expenses.
Unemployment is another serious concern. Many graduates leave tertiary institutions with excellent results, expecting to secure good jobs. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Some graduates are forced into jobs unrelated to their fields of study simply to survive. It is common to see university graduates running POS businesses, riding commercial motorcycles, or engaging in other occupations because suitable employment opportunities are unavailable. This reality discourages many young people and causes some to question the value of education.
Education can also be stressful. Students often have to prepare for tests, examinations, assignments, presentations, and continuous assessments. It can be frustrating when hardworking students see others engaging in examination malpractice without facing consequences. Nevertheless, genuine success comes through dedication and honest effort.
Peer pressure is another challenge affecting students. Some become influenced by material possessions and constantly compare themselves with their friends. The desire to keep up with others can distract students from their academic goals and lead them into making poor decisions.
Although these challenges exist, education remains one of the greatest investments anyone can make. The government should create more employment opportunities for graduates, empower young people through skills acquisition programmes, and expand scholarship schemes to make education more affordable. Examination malpractice should also be addressed through strict enforcement of school rules and disciplinary measures.
Learning does not only take place inside the classroom. We can learn anywhere and at any time. Students can develop personal reading timetables, study under a tree, read in libraries, or learn with friends. Parents also have an important role to play by assisting their children with homework and encouraging good reading habits. Social media, when used responsibly, can serve as a valuable learning tool for researching new words, acquiring new knowledge, and developing useful skills.
Group reading is another effective method of learning, although it may not suit everyone. Some students learn better by creating mental images, using objects for association, or applying their imagination to remember what they have studied. Teachers can also encourage learning by creating opportunities for students to ask questions, discuss different topics, and satisfy their curiosity.
Conclusion
Education is one of the greatest legacies anyone can receive. Although the journey may be challenging, the rewards are worth the effort. As the saying goes, "Nothing good comes easily." Education is a lasting gift that no one can take away. Unlike material possessions, the knowledge and skills gained through education remain with a person for life. It shapes character, creates opportunities, and prepares individuals for a better tomorrow.
