Is modern feminism a danger to the modern woman and society?

By Edheremu Keturah Elo-Oghene

Feminism to an extent necessarily is danger to women or society. Its impact depends on how it is understood and practiced. Moderate feminism that seeks equality and contribute positively to society, while extreme interpretations may create division or conflict.

Meaning of Feminism
Feminism is a social, political, and economical movement that advocates for the equality of women and men. It seeks to eliminate discrimination based on gender and ensure that women have equal rights, opportunities, and treatment in society. Feminism promotes the idea that a person's opportunities and value should not be limited by their sex.

Original Goals of Feminism
The original goals of feminism were focused on addressing inequalities faced by women. These goals included:
Political Equality  – Securing women's right to vote and participate in political processes.
Educational Opportunities  – Ensuring women had access to education comparable to that of men.
Economic Rights  – Advocating for fair wages, property ownership rights, and access to employment.
Legal Equality  – Removing laws that discriminated against women and ensuring equal protection under the law.
Social Justice  – Challenging cultural practices and attitudes that limited women's freedom and opportunities.

The early feminist movement primarily sought equal rights and opportunities rather than superiority over men.

In Mary Wollstonecraft's (1759-1797) book "A VINDICATION OF THE RIGHTS OF WOMAN", she argues that women should have equal access to education and opportunities.

Modern feminism has caused alot of Pressure on Modern Women

Critics argue that modern feminism has, in some cases, increased the pressure on women rather than reducing it. Many women are now expected to excel in multiple areas of life simultaneously; career, family, education, social life, and personal development. This can create a sense of constant competition and the feeling that they must "have it all" leading to emotional and psychological strain.

One of the major debates surrounding modern feminism is the tension between career ambitions and family responsibilities. While feminism has expanded career opportunities for women, some critics believe it has unintentionally led to the perception that professional success is more valuable than homemaking or motherhood. As a result, many women struggle to balance career goals with family commitments, often feeling torn between societal expectations and personal desires.

The expectation to succeed both professionally and personally can contribute to increased stress and burnout among modern women. Many women juggle demanding careers while also carrying significant responsibilities at home.

Identity and Purpose Struggles
Some observers believe that rapid social changes associated with modern feminism have created uncertainty about traditional gender roles and personal identity. Women may face conflicting ideas about what constitutes success, fulfillment, and purpose. While some find empowerment in greater freedom of choice, others may experience confusion as they navigate competing expectations regarding work, relationships, motherhood, and personal achievement.

Some women after finding identity in feminism intends to decline marriages that is they tends to not get married and they see more reasons to adopt a child or do *artificial insemination.

Declining Value of Marriage
Critics of modern feminism argue that it has contributed to a decline in the value placed on marriage. They believe that the strong emphasis on personal independence, career advancement, and self-fulfillment has led some women to view marriage as less important than previous generations did. As a result, marriage is sometimes postponed or avoided altogether, leading to concerns about its long-term significance in society.

Weakening Family Structure
The society believe that feminism has challenged traditional family roles and responsibilities, resulting in changes to the family structure. They argue that when the roles of parents become less clearly defined, disagreements and conflicts may arise regarding responsibilities within the home.

Effects on Child Upbringing
Another concern raised by the Society is the impact on children. They argue that the increasing focus on careers and personal ambitions may reduce the amount of time parents spend with their children. This can affect children's emotional, social, and moral development if parental guidance and supervision become limited. The Society therefore maintain that strong parental involvement and a stable family environment are essential for raising well-rounded children.

According to Bell Hooks – She emphasized that feminism should focus on ending sexism and promoting Justice rather than hostilities towards men.

Growing Gender Conflict

John Stuart Mill in his book subjection of women, he advocated for legal and social equality between men and women.

Women diverted from the main goal of feminism which is "Equality" and now shifts there goal and ideology to "a sense of competition" ie they want to have it all and always wants to be ahead

This can lead to misunderstandings and resentment, making it more difficult for men and women to work together harmoniously in society.

Men-Versus-Women Mentality
Another concern raised by critics is the development of a "men-versus-women" mentality. They argue that some feminist narratives portray men as oppressors and women as victims, creating an atmosphere of division rather than unity. This perspective can encourage people to view gender relations as a struggle for power instead of a partnership based on mutual respect and shared goals.

Relationship Challenges
In the 21st Century modern feminism has contributed more problem and challenges in romantic relationships. As traditional expectations regarding gender roles have changed, disagreements may arise concerning responsibilities, leadership, financial support, and decision-making within relationships. These differences in expectations can sometimes lead to conflicts, instability, or difficulties in maintaining long-term relationships.
And also leads to breakdown of cooperation between genders.

The World believe that feminism has weakened cooperation between men and women by encouraging competition rather than collaboration. The society functions best when both genders work together, recognizing and appreciating each other's strengths and contributions. When relationships between men and women become characterized and hostile, social harmony and cooperation may suffer.

Social Consequences
As we all know, what ever has an advantage also have a disadvantage. As much as people have benefitted from feminism, it also have social consequences.

Critics of modern feminism argue that the movement has produced certain social consequences that may negatively affect both women and society. They believe that changes in attitudes toward family, relationships, and individual achievement have altered traditional social structures and values. As a result, some critics claim that society is experiencing challenges that were less common in previous generations.

Delayed Marriage and Low Birth Rates are also negative impact of feminism

Feminism has encouraged women to prioritize education, careers, and personal goals before marriage and childbearing. While this has expanded opportunities for women, critics contend that it has also contributed to delayed marriages and lower birth rates in many countries. These tends may lead to population decline, an aging population, and future economic challenges.

Social Fragmentation
Literarily; This means when the society is been divided.
Feminism has contributed to social fragmentation by placing greater emphasis on individual rights and personal autonomy. They argue that when individual interests are prioritized over collective responsibilities, social bonds may weaken. This can reduce the sense of unity and shared purpose that helps communities function effectively.

Loss of Communal Values is also another a negative impact of feminism in the society.
Communal values such as family commitment, mutual sacrifice, and collective responsibility are been destroyed. Critics believe that an increased focus on personal fulfillment and independence may discourage individuals from making sacrifices for the benefit of their families and communities. As a result, traditional values that promote social cohesion may gradually weaken.

The Need for Balance
It is important to recognize that the movement has also brought significant benefits. A balanced approach seeks to preserve the positive achievements of feminism while addressing the challenges that may arise from its application.

Acknowledging the Achievements of Feminism
Feminism has played a major role in advancing the rights and opportunities of women. It has contributed to women's access to education, employment, political participation, and legal protection. These achievements have enabled many women to pursue their goals, contribute to society, and enjoy greater freedom and dignity. Any discussion of feminism should therefore acknowledge its important contributions to social progress.

Equality should not be viewed as a competition between men and women. Instead, it should focus on ensuring fairness, respect, and equal opportunities for all individuals. Efforts to promote gender equality are most effective when they encourage cooperation rather than conflict. Building healthy relationships between men and women requires understanding, dialogue, and mutual appreciation rather than hostility or division.

Societal needs for the balance of feminism;
A healthy society depends on strong families, responsible parenting, and mutual respect between individuals. Men and women should work together as partners, supporting one another in their personal, professional, and family responsibilities. Gender equality and strong family values do not have to be opposing goals; both can coexist when relationships are built on love, respect, commitment, and shared responsibility.

Other needs for balance of feminism

Feminism should not be viewed solely as a danger or solely as a benefit to modern women and society. The most reasonable approach is to pursue equality without hostility, strengthen family relationships, and encourage mutual respect between men and women. Through balance and cooperation, society can benefit from the positive aspects of feminism while minimizing potential challenges.

Conclusively:
Feminism has played a significant role in improving the status of women by promoting equal rights, access to education, economic opportunities, and protection from discrimination. These achievements have contributed greatly to the empowerment and advancement of women in modern society.

Furthermore, concerns about delayed marriage, low birth rates, social fragmentation, turning women to Misandrist and the decline of communal values were considered as possible social consequences.

At the same time, the achievements of feminism in advancing women's rights and opportunities were acknowledged, highlighting the importance of fairness, dignity, and equal treatment in society.

By balancing individual rights with social responsibilities, society can create an environment where both women and men can thrive, families remain strong, and communities continue to prosper.
