The Ransom Epidemic: Insecurity in Nigeria
This kidnapping for ransom has become one of the most serious security challenges faced in Nigeria. Before, the target was wealthy individuals, but now it has spread even to ordinary citizens, children, students, farmers, business owners and many more. The abductors kidnap people and demand large sums of money in exchange for their (the people) release.
The cost of the ransom epidemic is devastating. Victims often suffer physical, emotional and psychological trauma during captivity. Some are tortured, injured, molested, while others are brutally killed. Families experience emotional distress trying to raise money for this ransom payment. Some victims, even after payment, are still killed.
Insecurity has had a negative impact on education in Nigeria. In places like Benue, Kaduna, Niger and even Oyo, where gunmen reportedly abducted pupils, teachers, and school officials from a School in Ofiire local government Area which cost the life of one male teacher. As a result, students miss classes, schools are temporarily closed to protect children from being abducted. Many parents are scared to send their children to school especially in areas (The North) affected by kidnapping and banditry. This recent incidents has disrupted the academic activities and threatens the right of children to receive a safe and uninterrupted education.
Insecurity has also affected the churches in Nigeria. In some parts of the country, especially the North, churches have been attacked during worship services and this leads to deaths, injuries, trauma and destruction of property. In June 2022, armed men attacked St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, killing over 40 worshippers during Sunday mass and injuring many others. This incident showed that even a place of worship is not completely safe. In other cases, pastors and church members have been kidnapped while travelling for church activities. Because of all these, some churches reduced outdoor programmes, cancelled large gatherings and they also don't spend too much time. These events have threaten the religious and freedom of worship in Nigeria.
Generally in many ways, it has created fear in the lives of people in daily life, making people afraid to travel a long distance, carry out normal activities and even go to work in some areas. Many families have lost their loved ones through these attacks. Some suffer from trauma, and emotional distress and financial losses. Insecurity has reduced business activities and forced some companies to close down or relocate to safer areas. Farmers cannot safely access their farmlands in many towns thereby increasing the cost of living, especially food prices. Insecurity has affected Nigerians, and reduced the quality of life in Nigeria and slowed down development.
Insecurities in Nigeria possibly needs a solution but requires a collective and well-planned approach. First, the government must strengthen security agencies by providing better equipment and training to enable them respond quickly to threats. Job creation and youth empowerment should be expanded. There should be improved border control to reduce the illegal movement of weapons into the country. Finally, promoting education, peaceful living and social awareness can help reduce criminal behaviour and encourage peace among citizens.
In conclusion, the ransom epidemic and wider insecurity in Nigeria have become a major threats to human life, economic and national development. The constant cases of kidnapping, armed attacks, and communal violence have created fear among citizens and affected everyday activities; from education to religion, business to agriculture, none is left untouched by the effects of insecurity. Recent incidents across different parts of the country show the seriousness of the problem. Therefore urgent and sustained action is needed from the government, security agencies and citizens to address the root cause of insecurity. Only through collective effort, effective governance, and improved security measures can Nigeria overcome this challenge and build a safer and stable society.
