The Rising Menace of Kidnapping in Nigeria
By Esimaje Success
Kidnapping has become a serious problem in Nigeria in recent years. Almost every day, there are reports of people being kidnapped in different parts of the country. It has become a national concern because both urban and rural areas are affected. This act creates fear, pain, and anxiety, as people are no longer safe on the roads, in schools, while travelling, or even in their homes because no one knows where kidnappers may strike next. Therefore, this issue needs urgent attention to bring an end to it.
Kidnapping is the act of taking someone away against his or her will in order to extort money from the victim's relatives or friends. It happens on highways, in towns, villages, schools, and even in homes. Sometimes, victims are beaten, threatened, maltreated, or even killed when their families fail to pay the ransom demanded by the kidnappers. The rich, the poor, the old, the young, farmers, students, and ordinary citizens can all become targets. This shows that kidnapping is no longer a crime against only the rich but against every member of society.
Some of the major causes of kidnapping in Nigeria are unemployment, poverty, greed, and bad leadership. Many youths and graduates do not have jobs, so they see kidnapping as a quick way of making money. Furthermore, poverty pushes some people into crime when their expenses are greater than their income. Another cause is the excessive desire for wealth among some youths, as some people no longer see the need to work hard even when job opportunities are available. Moreover, bad leadership worsens the situation because when the government fails to provide jobs and improve the standard of living of the people, crime may increase. Also, the weak security system in some parts of the country encourages kidnapping because criminals believe they can escape arrest.
Kidnapping has many harmful effects on individuals and society at large. It creates fear and insecurity, as people become afraid to travel, visit friends, or move freely from one place to another. In some cases, victims are killed even after the ransom has been paid. Families also go through sleepless nights because of the pain and anxiety caused by the abduction of their loved ones. Women, girls, and even boys who are kidnapped may suffer sexual assault or other forms of abuse, leaving them with lasting physical and emotional trauma. Furthermore, when schools are attacked, parents may withdraw their children from school, and this can affect their education and academic progress. Kidnapping also affects the economy because business owners and investors may avoid places where insecurity is high.
There is an urgent need for the government to provide lasting solutions to tackle kidnapping in Nigeria. The government should ensure that any kidnapper who is caught faces the full weight of the law. In addition, young people should be taught the values of hard work and honesty so that they will not see crime as a means of survival. The government should also create job opportunities for the youth to reduce the rate of crime in the country. Furthermore, communities should report any suspicious movement or individuals to the security agencies immediately. The police and other security agencies should be properly equipped and trained to handle kidnapping cases effectively.
In conclusion, kidnapping is a serious problem in Nigeria that affects both the rich and the poor. If urgent steps are not taken, the problem will continue to grow and remain a major threat to peace, security, and national development.
