DELSU SCHOOL FEES INCREMENT: SPEAKER OF THE SUG 32ND ASSEMBLY APPEALS FOR CALM, UNDERSTANDING AND HOPE AMID STUDENTS’ CONCERNS
A MESSAGE OF HOPE AND UNDERSTANDING TO ALL DELSU STUDENTS ON THE RECENT INCREASE IN SCHOOL FEES
I understand the frustration, disappointment and anxiety that have followed the recent increase in school fees. I know that this development has placed an additional burden on many students and their parents, especially at a time when the economic situation in the country is already challenging.
However, I sincerely appeal to every DELSU student to remain calm and hopeful as we navigate this difficult period.
I understand that many of you are asking: Why such a significant increase? Why now? And how are students and parents expected to cope?
These are legitimate questions, and nobody should fault you for asking them. Education is already demanding, and the financial responsibility that comes with it should never be taken lightly.
While the increase may be difficult to accept, it is important to understand that the decision was not taken without consideration of prevailing circumstances. The economic realities of the country have affected virtually every sector, including our university system. Even the university management would not necessarily have wished for a situation where students and parents would have to bear additional financial responsibilities.
I also want to make it clear that the Students’ Union Government has not been indifferent to the concerns of students. Over time, the Union has made several efforts and representations towards ensuring that the financial burden on students is not unnecessarily increased. The present situation does not mean that the Union has abandoned its responsibility or stopped standing up for the interests of the students.
We care about you. We understand your concerns, and we do not take your struggles for granted.
Do you remember the moments when the Union stood up for students and intervened on issues affecting their welfare? Those efforts were never for publicity; they were borne out of our responsibility and genuine concern for the student community. And that responsibility remains.
Regarding NELFUND, while the student loan initiative may provide some relief to eligible students, we must also acknowledge that it is not a complete solution to the financial challenges confronting students and their families.
My appeal, therefore, is not for you to pretend that everything is fine. Your concerns are valid, and your voices deserve to be heard. Rather, I ask that we approach this difficult moment with patience, understanding and hope.
To every student whose parents are struggling to meet this new financial demand, I want you to know that this difficult moment will not define your future. The sacrifices you are making today will not be in vain. Keep believing in your dreams, keep pushing, and never allow this temporary challenge to make you lose sight of the reason you came to DELSU.
We may not have all the answers today, but we must not lose hope for a better tomorrow.
The Students’ Union Government remains committed to the welfare and interests of every DELSU student.
May God strengthen our parents, guardians and every student going through this difficult period.
Great DELSUites!
Great Brains!
Signed:
